JAWAI DAM:
The origin of Jawai river is in the hills of Goriya village of Bali town (District Pali), Sukri river is its main tributary. The river flows in a north- west direction for about 96 km (60 mi), before joining Khari River near Sayala in Jalore district, after which it is called Sukri river. Its catchment area is 2,976 km² (1,149 sq mi) in Udaipur, Pali and Jalore districts.
The word jawai translates to "son-in-law" or "the husband of your daughter" in English Construction: The dam was built across the Jawai River, a tributary of the Luni River, by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur. Construction began on May 12, 1946, and was completed in 1957.
Size: Jawai Bandh is the largest man-made dam in western Rajasthan, covering 102,315 acres and standing 61.25 feet high.
Purpose: The dam was built to provide water for irrigation and to generate hydro power. It's the main water source for Pali district, and also supplies water to some villages in Jalore district.
Wildlife: Jawai Bandh is a leopard conservation reserve, and is home to a variety of other animals including panthers, hyenas, chinkaras, nilgai, bears, and wolves. The area is also home to many species of birds, including pelicans, ducks, cormorants, storks, and flamingos. which make for a unique safari experience.

JAWAI BANDH'S RICH HISTORY
A saga called Maharshi Javali found a shelter in this region for doing meditation in the Vedic age. According to Mahabharat, Pandavas are believed to make this place as their temporary home for a while during the exile period. King Kanishka had conquered the Jaitaran and Rohat area which are part of Pali in 120 AD. By the end of 7th century AD, king Harshvardhan, from chalukya dynasty started ruling over Jaitaran and Rohat. After the arrival of Mugals, the Rajput kings tried to beat back them, but they had faced problem. Pali and all the surrounding area fell under the rule of Rathores of Marwar at the end of 16th and 17th centuries. At 1857, thakurs of Pali had fight against the British. There is also a history of tribals living in this area, who are known as 'Rabari'.
